Week 11   (Summer 4B)      EDTC 6340 Advanced Applications of Technology

Session Plan and Activities

This week, you will be concentrating on your Web 2.0 personal choice applications in preparation of your Collaborate presentations. You will continue with developing information on your tools.  In your wiki,  you will develop a unit in which you select 2-3 tools to use for communicating with online students. Finally, you will be reading Chapter 9 and reflecting on it in your wiki.

Readings/Viewings

Please read the articles before class on Tuesday.

Meeting this week.
Due this Week

The actions you need to complete this week as well as directions for each activity follow.

For the remainder of the week, please continue with your personal Web 2.0 choices and your Diigo posting.

Communication

Thus far, we have used a variety of tools with which to communicate with your students and in which your students can communicate with one another. For this activity, think about a topic you would like to explore with your online students using asynchronous communication. Write a brief description of the activity. Then, select at least three of the tools we have explored thus far and tell how you would use them to communicate with your students. Discuss how using these tools would enhance their learning and challenge them to think critically about the topic. Please post this in your wiki in the appropriate week.

Soon - Web 2.0 Presentations begin:

For your Collaborate presentation, you will be introducing us to your selected 3 Web 2.0 tools.  Please look at the Portal page for dates and times on which you will present.   Please check, as some dates may have changed (moved later) as we move forward through the semester.

You may choose how you want to present your information in Collaborate.  You can do a Web tour, a PPT presentation, a YouTube video or ????  Please be creative and use the knowledge you have gained from your textbook on how to develop effective presentations.  In other words, no information dumps please.   When you are presenting your Web 2.0 technologies, consider yourself as an educational PR person who wants to show off the technology in the most possible light and encourage others to explore your chosen technology.

The Collaborate room is always open and you are all moderators, so take the time to go in and make sure you know how Collaborate features work if you are using them.  You may want to spend some time rehearsing so that you have a good idea how things move from one activity to another (for example, using a PPT , then switching to a Web tour).  On the day of the presentation, I should not have to tell you how to upload a PPT, show your desktop or take us on a Web tour.  If you don't know how to do those things on the day of your presentation, points will be taken off.

Presenting the first time on Collaborate (or even the 10th or 11th time) can be unnerving.  I understand how intimidating it can be and I understand how upsetting it can be if (when) gremlins decide to attack.  You will not be penalized for rogue gremlin attacks as long as  you are prepared.  If you are sharing a video, I recommend that you use the technique that is most effective - provide the link in the chat bar and invite everyone to go to the site and view the video and then come back to discuss it. Graphics load slower than text - websites load fairly quickly.

As hard as it may be, try to relax.  This is not a very format presentation in which I count off for stutters or ahems.  A conversation about your technologies will serve you best.  If you have any questions about the presentation, please bring it up in class. If you are wondering about it, someone else probably is as well.

The rubric for your  presentation is below. Remember, all the data is on your website and will be added to the UTB site before the end of the semester. So have fun while you present and really showcase what makes your technologies the most exciting ones out there.

Points Possible Points Earned Category Description
25   Creatively presented three (3) Web 2.0 technologies in an engaging manner using tools that have been studied
20   Presented best use for each technology. For example, presentation, data analysis, product creation, etc. Since Web 2.0 is inherently collaborative, no need to mention this unless it is especially beneficial for collaborating.
15   Of the three, presented your favorite and why
10   For more information - your site link.
15   Prepared to present. For this, make sure that if you are going to use PPT that you already have it loaded before class or are ready to share on the desktop. If you are going to do a web tour, then you already have links ready to share and know how to share. Your microphone issues have been resolved and you are ready to go. Gremlins are understood - but you need to make sure you know how to get things up and running. Hint: Practice, arrive at class early on the presentation day, etc.
15   Met time limit of 20 minutes (Practice ahead of time, be concise, don't ramble, etc.
100   Total score

Rubric for the other two presentations:

Points Possible Points Earned Category Description
25   Creatively presented two (2) Web 2.0 technologies in an engaging manner using tools that have been studied
25   Presented best use for each technology. For example, presentation, data analysis, product creation, etc. Since Web 2.0 is inherently collaborative, no need to mention this unless it is especially beneficial for collaborating.
15   For more information - your site link.

If you are going to do a web tour, then you already have links ready to share and know how to share. Your microphone issues have been resolved and you are ready to go.
