A Learning Design

Top 10 Principles of the Efficiency Model

1. I am the teacher you are the student so listen to what I have to say and make sure to take good notes.

2. You should already know this information, it is common sense.

3. There is to be no talking in my classroom.

4. Ok, we are done with social studies, clear your minds and let's work on our English.

5. I am the teacher, I know it all.

6. You must do it my way.

7. Here is a list, you must memorize it.

8. You must sit in rows and face me in the front.

9. These are the facts you must know them by heart.

10. What do you mean you forgot your book? You can't learn without it.

Top 10 Challenges to the Efficiency Model

1. Learning does not stop when school ends. We are always learning.

2. Not everyone learns the same way.

3. All students are raised differently with different backgrounds.

4. The classroom must focus on the students and less on the teacher.

5. We must make learning fun, and not tedious.

6. Teachers need to show students how to learn on their own.

7. Students need more than just books to make learning meaningful.

8. Students must use technology to explore their world. There is more to life than just a classroom.

9. Students should be able to solve problems and present what they have discovered.

10. Every subject that is taught in school is related.

Step One: Define a Learn Goal

I want my students to learn how to create a functional resume using a personal computer.

Step Two: State Objectives

Given a personal computer and Microsoft's WORD program the student will be able to type a properly formatted resume that is both functional and effective. The student will be able to print the resume and save the resume on the computer for later editing.

Step Three: Sequence Instruction

1. Student must have access to a personal computer.

2. Student must know how to turn on the computer and open Microsoft's WORD program.

3. Students must know what a resume is.

4. Students must know how to enter information for the resume into the computer.

5. Students must know how to properly format their resume.

6. Students must know what a functional and effective resume looks like, and how to apply that to their own.

7. Students must learn how to save a document to their computer.

8. Students must learn how to print out their resume.

Step Four: Determine Learning Success

For the objectives of turning on the computer, opening Microsoft's WORD program and entering information into the computer can all be assessed by teacher observation. If a student does not know how to achieve the objectives the teacher can immediately assist the student. For the objectives of saving the resume to the computer and printing the resume can be assessed by asking to see students saved file and students hard copy. If the student can't produce the resume file or hard copy the teacher can then assist the student with the proper procedures for completing the objective. For the objective of creating a properly formatted, effective, and functional resume this can be assessed by reviewing the student's hard copy of the resume. Corrections will be made to the student's resume by the teacher and returned to the student so that the student can apply the changes to the saved copy of the resume.

A Reflection and Critique of the Design

I feel that the strengths of my design are that the teacher will be supplying step by step instructions. I also feel that the student's will take interest because this assignment is personalized. The limitations of this design are that not all students have access to a computer and/or printer. Also not all students have used a computer before so some students will be lost and not know what to do. I feel that my design is consistent with the attributes of today's technology users because students are using technology to achieve the objectives of creating the resume and printing out their results. Students also have access via the Internet to several examples of resumes. I feel that my design is like learning outside of school because the student is encouraged to reflect on their past experiences and search for information that they feel is beneficial to the assignment. The student is also free to design their own resume as long as it meets certain formatting criteria. I feel that my design both reflects and conflicts with the constructivist learning of multiple intelligences. It reflects in a way that students are free to share ideas of past experiences that they may have. They are also able to do research on the Internet for ideas that they can use on the assignment. The conflict occurs because certain procedures must be followed when using the computer as well as formatting the resume.
