Cycle A Individual: Teacher as Problem Solver

  • Read the Reflection Rubric.
  • Read the Scenario.
  • Think about what you understand to be true and the reasons for those ideas about the scenario (prior knowledge). Upload your prior knowledge reflection to your Portfolio in ESSEA for a grade.
  • Post your understandings in your Discussion Space.
  • Review the sample investigations and resources.
  • Read your teammates' postings and respond to at least one other person's ideas in Discussion Space.

Lists of things I know

Hurricanes can cause a devastating amount of flooding.

Living through hurricanes in the Rio Grande Valley.

Rain from the outer edges of hurricane Dolly left devastating parts of the Rio Grande Valley flooded.

Hurricanes are natural disasters that can claim the lives of people and animals.
Known catastrophe aftermath of hurricane Katrina, from news media.
Hurricane Katrina was as devastating as the Galveston Hurricane.

Hurricanes create detrimental winds.
Having lived through several hurricanes.

The winds speed in hurricanes can be harsh.

Winds and rains from hurricanes exacerbate erosion on the shore.
Living near South Padre Island and hearing about the erosion of  the shore.
Erosion is a constant problem and hurricanes may contribute significantly.

Crops are destroyed by the flooding cause by hurricanes.
Farmers have lost crops due to flooding in the past.
Crops are ruined by drought as well as flooding.

The Galveston sea wall was built to deter erosion and flood.
Visiting Galveston Island and reading historical markers.
The sea wall was built out of necessity after the hurricanes in 1900.

List of things I know I don’t know:

Have hurricanes increased in number or intensity or both?
The number of hurricanes since the 1900 disaster and intensity of the storms is unknown to make an assumption.
That information would be necessary to compare and make a statement.

List of things I wonder about

Was a factor of the degree of devastation a result of a lack of citizens being prepared?
There were no warning systems in place like we have now, The National Weather Service.
The sea wall was built significantly higher after the disaster as a measure to prevent another disaster.
