Orientation

1st Orientation Activity: Welcome

  • Complete a pre-ESS analysis on a topic of your interest describing the effects on air, water, land and living things.  Upload your analysis.  After you choose your even, list all the relationships you can thing of to each of the earth's spheres.  During the course, be sure to return to this ESS analysis and improve it with what you are learning.  At the end of the course, you will have a change to turn in your best ESS analysis for your final project.
  • Learn about the Earth system science approach through assigned readings and a tutorial in the ESSEA course.
  • Introducing yourself to your team and select a team name.

Resources to read:  What is Earth System Science?, Earth System Science in a Nutshell, and  An introduction to an ESS Analysis.

2nd Orientation Activity: Earth System Science

Read the volcano example and Volcano Scenario and complete the first six steps in the PBL Model. Use this scenario to practice analyzing an environmental issue from an Earth system science standpoint using Problem-Based Learning as a framework for idea building, testing, and design. Discuss your ideas with your teammates and complete your individual volcano analysis. There is no need for resources at this point, just focus on the interactions. Upload your volcano analysis to your Portfolio on ESSEA.

Readings:  PBL Model, Developing a Problem Statement., The Integration of the ESS Analysis and the PBL Mode, What is Earth System Science?, and An Introduction to ESS Analysis.

`

Prezi on Volcano Analysis - the purpose of the prezi on the volcano analysis is to collaborate as a group to collectively edit and complete a presentation.  It will allow us to support our data using charts, graphs, images, video and other resources, which will allow our group to fulfill maximum standards of our ESS analysis rubric.

3rd Orientation Activity: Earth System Science

Revisit your initial ESS analysis and reflect on how to improve it using the Rubrics.
