Page history last edited by Linda Newell 12 years, 6 months ago

Learning Activity Summary

Readings

This week you will read:

  • Module 3
  • They Snooze, You Lose by Lynell Burmark, chapters 1-2

Seminar

There is no seminar this week due to the holiday.

Introduction

This week we begin to add to the “conversation” on the Web. As you learned last week, blogging is a powerful medium. It can be individually cathartic or widely influential (or both!) It can have a specific focus or contain nothing more than an individual’s rambling thoughts on a variety of subjects and issues. From cooking and car repair to politics to messages from a Grandmother to a grandchild (that’s mine!), there can be no doubt that blogs are inextricably intertwined into the social and collaborative use of technology around the world.

Learning Outcomes

  • Begin an understanding of how to create more engaging presentations.
  • Continue writing in your blog regarding your one aspect of your educational journey in this course.
  • Begin to consider how to utilize Web 2.0 tools in the classroom.

Weekly Assignment

This week you will have two assignments. First, you will continue to add to your blog, which focuses upon our course text, They Snooze,You Lose by Lynell Burmark. You will add two entries – one for each chapter. Each entry will need to include:

  • A brief synopsis of the chapter
  • Your opinion of what Burmark states in his book
  • A total of 150+ words

Next, an updated copy of your presentation is to be placed in a third entry that reflects changes you have implemented based upon chapters 1 and 2. A short paragraph describing these changes needs to accompany the embedded presentation.

To do-

  1. Go to Blogger and create two new entries (150+ words), one for each chapter. All writing is expected to be college-level and utilize APA formatting and style as appropriate for a blog format.
  2. Open the presentation you created in weeks 1-2 and make changes based upon your readings and application for Burmark's principles.
  3. Upload to Slideshare as a new file. Do not replace or delete the old presentation from Slideshare.
  4. In a third entry, embed your changed presentation. If you have forgotten how to do this, instructions can be found in week 2.
  5. In the same entry, add a short paragraph describing these changes.

Your grade will be predicated upon the following:

To do

Points

Add two blog entries

2

Offer insightful, quality evaluations of your learning experiences in Ch. 1 & 2 (150+ words each)

8

Updating of presentation to match comments

8

Embed new presentation into third entry

2

Description of changes in third entry 2

Your second assignment has to do with Web 2.0-ing your classroom. Consider the scenario below:

Ms. Jayaraman is a 6th grade science teacher and is new to teaching. Two of her TEKS are below:

§112.18. Science, Grade 6, Beginning with School Year 2010-2011.

(12)  Organisms and environments. The student knows all organisms are classified into Domains and Kingdoms. Organisms within these taxonomic groups share similar characteristics which allow them to interact with the living and nonliving parts of their ecosystem. The student is expected to:

      (D)  identify the basic characteristics of organisms, including prokaryotic or eukaryotic, unicellular or multicellular, autotrophic or

             heterotrophic, and mode of reproduction, that further classify them in the currently recognized Kingdoms;

     (E)  describe biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem in which organisms interact.

She is somewhat comfortable on a computer, but rarely uses it outside the classroom. This year she has 25 students. Two students are LEP (level 2) and are English immersion only. Classroom technology includes:

  • 8 student workstations (PC)
  • web cam, microphone, and speakers
  •  connection to Internet with a moderate level of website blocking
  • whiteboard and clicker system
  • scanner
  • digital projector
  • software includes:

video editing
web page authoring
presentation
database
concept mapping
spreadsheet
word processing
optical character recognition
graphics/photo editing
DVD/CD writing
digital storytelling
audio editing
Web 2.0 technologies
screen reader

Ms. Jayaraman has asked you, the school’s MTT, for guidance in creating an engaging, computer-based activity that will help her introduce these TEKS to her students. She has heard of Web 2.0 but does not know much about it. How would you go about suggesting and guiding her on a lesson using these technologies?

 To do:

  1. Consider the tools you have been introduced to thus far in this course. Apply them to the learning that needs to occur in this classroom. Choose one to apply to this lesson.
  2. Identify one other technology from the list above that would be appropriate for enhancing this lesson while addressing the diverse needs of all students.
  3. Write a 150+ word response on a word processing document. Explain how you apply the tools you selected from #1 and #2 above in this situation. All writing is expected to be college-level and utilize APA formatting and style as appropriate.
  4.  Go to Box.net and open a free account.
  5. Save your response to the correct folder below -

Click on the menu in the upper right hand corner to upload your file.

Your grade will be predicated upon the following rubric:

To do

Points

Apply one course-introduced tool to this lesson

2

Identify one other tool from list

2

Write 150+ word response regarding the implementation of these tools in the classroom - use critical thinking to explain appropriateness of both tools and your rationale
