Top 10 Principles

Efficiency Model of Learning

10.          Students are programmed with instruction but are still in the beta stage. (Programmed Instruction)

9.            Middle School student gets detention for wearing an Anti Bloom’s Taxonomy T-shirt . (Back side of shirt reads:  “Goofiness, Sillyness, Puns, Jokes, Pranks, Laughter.)

8.            (Thorndike)     How do you get to Carnegie Hall?  Practice, practice, practice!

7.            When all else fails “standardize”.

6.            Top 10 graduates are model students, that is “ADDIE Model”  prototypes.

5.            Student asks question.  Enforcing it’s our overt curriculum teacher says “read the book”.

4.            Parents are ticketed due to their children speeding through the curriculum at their school. (Accelerated Math and Accelerated Reading Programs)

3.            Teacher gets ticketed for exceeding the speed limit.  (increasing the speed of learning at local school.)

2.            Governor Swarchnieger replaces 5th grade teachers with Geo Safaris game.

1.            California Governor Arnold Swarchneiger states there will be further cut-backs and huge teacher layoffs.  But everything will go on as normal; students construct their own knowledge anyway! (Efficiency Learning vs. Constructivist Learning)

Efficiency Model of Learning

10

California N-Geners have no problem learning with only part-time teachers in the classroom. (“Learning is something students must do for themselves.” )

9

Not everything can be standardized. (Emerson’s 4 essential elements necessary for efficiency.

8

Ms. Scott received an “iPod” from her grandchildren for her 60th birthday and would like to integrate it into her classroom instruction.  She asked the students, “where is the on/off switch? “  Teachers need t learn to use the technology.

7

No funds for ILSs.

6

Insufficient state funding for “Geo Safaris”.

5

When students fail to learn we can call “Intel” and have them manufacture programmed processor for students.

4

If students are encouraged to collaborate, this means their cheating.  (Persuade teachers and community to encourage collaboration.)

3

Insufficient space to run any ILS (Integrated Learning System)

2

In order to curtail the obesity problem in America’s classrooms, administrators take the “One-Size-Fits-All approach”.

1

It takes a community to build a learner.

FACTS of Design (Model): A Summary

As teachers we are presented with the responsibility of grooming our students toward a path of self-sufficiency by being prepared to become problem solvers via integration of real world scenarios or problem-based learning.

The F is for Foundations

Students must be given varied opportunities to explore the five foundations of learning:  knowledge, problem solving, literacy, information using, and community.

The A is for Activities

Teachers design opportunities to engage students in activities which will allow supporting and shaping abilities toward thinking and problem-solving.

The C is for Content

Content should be reflective of subject and adequately interesting to allow for student engagement.

The T is for Tools

Tools can allow for designers to allow for student learning in creative and valuable ways.

The S is for the System of Assessment

Designers construct alternative assessment strategies which are inclusive of portfolios, peer critiques, rubrics; etc. allowing a more appropriate way to assess student learning.
