I live in Austin. I'm not a teacher, though I have done some teaching of teachers. I'm in educational publishing--I create textbook materials and especially educational technology. I'm much better at writing than speaking or engaging a class! I look forward to meeting you all.

I'd love to hear about you and your thoughts for a team name. We are officially Team 5, but I think we can do better than that... What do we perhaps have in common?

Hello Team 5... what do you guys think about The Achievers? Sounds sort of elementarish, but I like it, but maybe we can come with something more unique. As for what do I like, I like art, technology, web design, karaoke, and crafts.

We could be THE ROCKET SCIENTISTS

Or...we could quote Chester Cheetah: "It aint ESSEA being CH-ESSEA!"

As for my bio, I am an elementary school librarian in Irving, Texas. I must confess that living "up north" makes me feel like a bit of a "foreigner"! I love to sing (and do so at Mass on the weekends).

I also LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to read. In fact, I am about to start on the final/fourth book of the Twilight series. I can't believe I got sucked in!! It is a long story in more ways than one.

The module gave us some ideas for how we might settle on a name. Here's what it says:
Choosing a Name
Yes, this is a warmup for building consensus, but it is also better to have a name you choose than to call yourselves "Team B."

Start by brainstorming - everyone list several ideas with a reason - with no evaluative comments. Try to get everyone to contribute, even if you have to send email with a special request. Get into the habit of requiring everyone on your team to participate. Bring some local color into the team name discussion with lines like, "Where I come from, we say ... " or "Around here, we have ..." Let your style show with the names you suggest, the questions you ask, or the comments you make. Set a deadline for that initial posting.
Evaluate the list of ideas. Have each person choose their first two choices for names and see if you have overlap. Reduce the list as much as you can - say to five names.
Discuss - don't vote! Ask each person to give a pro and con for each of the top five names. Based on this analysis, choose your top two and post again. Look for overlap. Do pros and cons on the top two (by count). One of your top two may even be a hybrid or a modification of one of the names.
Decide - each person makes a proposal for the top name and others chime in with support. You may need to modify the name if someone has a problem with it.

If this seems like a lot of discussion to decide on a silly name, remember it is for practicing consensus building. It is more important when you are considering a list of criteria you all will have to use to evaluate activities. Try to build your interest in the process and practice being constructive and a good online listener. That will serve you well when you are asked to be a "critical friend" to your classmates.

SO, how about if we finish brainstorming by tomorrow, Thurs, at noon. Then by Fri at noon everyone can submit their top five with pro/cons; then by Sat at noon we decide on a final name? Maybe with a conference call or emails from Friday to Saturday? What do y'all think?

Hey everyone. I live in Tampa, FL but since I fly helicopters for the Coast Guard, I spend roughly half the year deployed down here in the Caribbean. My schedule can be really hectic at times so I apologize ahead of time. However we're past the halfway mark of hurricane season so think things should begine to slow down. I'm not a teacher in a school room setting but I've been flying long enough to be an instructor to train the new guys. Look forward to working with everyone!

Does anyone know the link to our profiles we did at the beginning of this class? I'm trying to find out if Edna Miranda is in our group. She's not on the main list, but she was in an email Dr. C sent out with all the team members listed. Plus, it might be nice to see what everyone in our group said about themselves on that page...

My top five (in no particular order):
ESSEA Riders - just rolls of your tongue, doesn't it?
ESS Pirates - because I spend a good portion of my year in the Caribbean
Deep See-ers - I love the ocean
Land and Sea - fitting with our group and hey I came up with it
ESSEA Breezy - another one I came up with reminded by Sharon's "It aint ESSEA being CH-ESSEA!"

Envelope please. And the winner is...

I found a theme song for us! I think it works with the ESSEA Riders theme, or we could pick any number of lyrics from it.

I like ESSEA Riders and I also like Sharon's idea, "It ain't ESSEA being CH-ESSEA!, so either one of those is good for me. Oh, Jennifer, I live in Edinburg, TX.

Sharon Dressel said

I like Ray's description and analysis of the scenario. I wonder if he has ever done incident management before? Jennifer's comments made me think, too. I inferred that lahars are mudslides, but is my inference correct? That would be part of our research...to define that term.

Here are a couple of good links, the first is about lahars. The second is about the risks of Mt. Ranier:
