Ch. 12 Putting it all together

1. Tweak the Text: More images rather than text

2.start with concrete ideas – Show and Tell which is concrete image to abstract words

3. Handouts: include all the information and resources used.

4. Change it up: Change it up every so many minutes so the audience is not sitting the whole time. Provide activities where they can move around.

5. Music- can be soothing to the audience and keep them awake.

6. Follow your passion: use techniques or skills you enjoy using in order to get your message across to the audience. You have to love what you do!

7. Create a context: images are always powerful

8: Humor: people can recall information when they are engaged or it is humourous.

9. Engage emotions: Postive enviourment is key to keep the audience engaged.

10: tell stories: personalize your presentation so that you can make more connections.

Ch. 11

vision and hearing

  • Make photographs large enough to be see
  •  Provide visual with audio

Smell

  • Information or visuals can trigger off a memory of that scent or smell.

Taste

  • Provide the audience an opportunity to enjoy tasty snacks so that they stay away during presentations.

Bodily-kinesthetic senses

  • Have the audience move around so that they do not fall asleep. The can do activities in which they can move and collaborate.

Ch. 10 Storytelling is important because it helps the audience connect to the ideas presented. Storytelling is more of a personal connection that you have to the lesson that you in turn relay to the audience.

Student-Student Classroom Interaction

Jigsaw Activity

Divide the class in half. Half of the students will receive Vocabulary Words. Half of the students will receive the definitions only. The students will have to search for their pair and match up. From there, the students will all form a circle (standing next to their pair) and everyone will be able to read the matches aloud. Students can use Diigo to post their responses and search for an article that relates to their word and definition.

Student-Instructor Classroom Interaction

Think Pair Share

The students will think about the story they have read pair up with someone else in class and discuss the theme of story. After they are done, they will come up with one answer to turn in and share with the class. Students can type up their answer in Padlet to share with others in class. On Padlet the students are able to view all the responses, as well as the instructor. This can also be a discussion done on Today’s Meet or Diigo. The students can use Today’s Meet to discuss and collaborate with their partner. On Diigo they are able to share their information and receive comments from others in class as well.

Ch. 9 We need to use positive and healing messages in presentation that can make an impact on the students and audiences. Using these words makes the presentation seem more appealing because of the positive outlook it has.

kim's communication week 11.docx

Ch. 8 Select music that is appealing to your audience but at the same time connects to the presentation. Video clips with music to set the tone would be great to use.

copyright laws 3 kim.pptx

Ch. 7 Images are great to start with when it comes to presenting. Making the connections between you and the audience is more appealing to all. The use of colored images are great to use especially when presenting to students. They are not attracted to black and white photos and it is boring to them. You can choose to place words with the images or just use the images to have the students guess what the image is about.

Ch 6 Activities should be engaging and fun for the students so that they enjoy learning much more.

There are 3 types of humor:

1. Neoteny (childlike exuberance)

2. Surprise (unexpected detours)

3. Historical perspective ("Someday you'll look back on this and laugh"

Ch. 5 There has to be some humor in the way things are presented because it keeps the audience on their toes and intrigued in the lesson.

TOday's Meet presentation.mp4

  • Making abstract items/ideas concrete is difficult but is necessary in order for the audience to understand the concepts presented.
  • Prior knowledge is important so students can build on their knowledge. Technology is great way to help keep students engaged in the presentations and connect with the lessons.
  • Visuals are excellent examples to use when comparing and contrast items/ideas.
  • Words in visuals are also a great idea to help people make connections with the ideas presented.
  • Humor is a must to keep the audience engaged in the presentation and keeps them alert.

After reviewing Michael's scores, I realized Michael's overall score was a 182 in which he scored highest in Computer Skills of 5.0.

His lowest skill was Dependent Learning which he scored a 3.83. I've had discussions with Michael and he does  seem pretty tech savy so I'm not surprised he scored highest in computers. I am surprised, as well as he was, with his lowest skill which was Dependent Learning. I would think in grad school it would be difficult to be so dependent on others for learning but he feels it came out this way because of his time constraints. He feels he can have more time now to better organize himself.

Kevin Spurgin scored a 200 overall with Computer Skills being his highest (5.0) and his lowest skill being Academics (4.0). He does seem pretty computer savy, as well as Michael, but I was surprised with his lowest being academics. He seems very bright and intelligent that I would have never thought that would have been the lowest.

My scores was a 185. This basically said that I have some difficulty with technology.

Highest skill: Depending learning with a 4.17.

Lowest skill: Academic Skills 3.92

This was surprising because I would consider myself an independent learner, but I can see that I need more help with technology. I was surprised with my lowest skill because I am taking 3 classes per semester and have maintained a high GPA. I guess I need to step back and reflect on what I need to work more on

I do not completely agree with the assessment results because I also consider myself an independent learner with a drive to improve myself. I believe my technology experience gives me added value to help me get through. Even though I might not know the answer to all technology “components”, I do know where to find the answer. I think my score wasn’t as high in the “dependent learning” area because of my time issue. Now that I completed two classes I will have more time for this class. This assessment will give me the opportunity to reflect and see how I can better organize myself.

Good summaries. In addition to discussing the key points in each chapter, reflect on how this information will impact you - and your students in the classroom. Look at aha! moments - times when you see how this can change your skill in reaching students and in mentoring other teachers to be more effective.  I want to kind of get a look into your brain as you are learning new things, disagreeing or questioning new things and things about what you read. This reflection is important as you are learning new technologies as well.

Ch. 4 To be effective presenters, we have to get their attention and make the presentations stick. Pay attention of how to dress. You need to attract the audience and not distract. The messsage should be to able to get the audience's attention.

Ch. 3It's a good idea to put up posters around the room that relate to your presentation to be used as side notes for audience. Good presenter should be able to hit all multiple intelligences. If I were a presenter, I would be a motivator because I'd be able to lecture, entertain and motivate others to push the idea forward.

Ch 2 Visuals and Text help the audience understand the presentation. The show and tell method works well when presenting because the reader sees the photo and then listens to the information. If a handout is printed, the presenter should not read off the handouts because it will be redundant. It is better to post information on a website that would complement the presenation.

Article 1

  1. In the PLCs, the goal is answer questions about how they are going to teach the student, if the student mastered the concept and to see what else needs to be done to help struggling students.
  2. Teacher’s will need to collaborate together to make sure that all students are successful.
  3. Students will be tested to assess their strengths and needs in order to plan the lessons for the class.
  4. Teachers also have to think about how they will teach to make sure all students learn the concepts.
  5. Teachers need to learn to work together to help students meet success in the end.

Article 2

  1. Teachers who are supported and recognized for their teacher practices tend to stay longer and work better.
  2. Planning is important to for educators because it allows them to prepare their instruction carefully and work with others.
  3. Collaboration is key to because there are some who are new teachers and others who are experienced. The more wisdom there is in developing the curriculum, the better the lessons can be.
  4. In professional learning communities, there are 5 attributes such as: supportive and shared leadership, collective creativity, shared values and vision, supportive conditions, and shared personal practice.
  5. Professional Learning Communities is all about engaging students, faculty, administration, students and everyone in the community.

Article 3

  1. Administrators should be leaders instead of trying to use their power to make everyone else inferior to them.
  2. Both administrators and teachers need to collaborate for the betterment of their students.
  3. Learning communities should be the starting point for the school to move forward.
  4. The more administration gets involved in the learning, the more productive the school will be.
  5. Professional development will assist in teachers and principals becoming more familiar with the PLCs.

Chapter 1 was very informative and there were some facts that caught my attention. For instance, the facts about color visiuals increase to read up to 80%, color boosts motivation and participation up to 80% and color enhances learning and improves retention by more than 75%. The chapter also discussed the use of colors and how the human eye sees yellow first. This is really interesting because it makes me think about how we highlight information in yellow to retain information. I guess same thing goes for colors in presentations and such. When making powerpoints, it is important to make sure the message and palette are consistent and there are on average about 40 words. This is good to know before making my Copyright Law powerpoint.

I learned that Dojo is a free app used for motivation and helps with attendance, class behaviors and other reward systems. The students can have their own Avator when creating their Dojo and monitor their positive and negative behaviors in class. It can be sectioned off by class and by student.

At first it was a bit overwhelming because I didn’t know where to begin. I am not a pro at technology but I know enough to get by. After actually taking the time to sit down and read each step and review the tutorials, I was able to put everything together. I had always wondered how the Wiki work and now I feel a bit more confident of how it works and would like to use it in my classroom. The directions were understandable and the videos helped so much more. This was the first technology class that I have taken and am glad I was given explicit instructions of how it all works beforehand. This activity would benefit the online learner greatly because it gives them insight as to how the system works. We have to know the basis of the programs used online before we can teach them in the classroom.  I think that the big hurtle is sitting down and reading directions and viewing movies. I love to see how confident and capable students in this class are by the end of the semester when they come in as new learners. And, I do like those newbies in the class because they are powerful mentors and leaders because they can truly understand how others feel when they are intimidated or afraid to learn technology. You can really empathize and model how quick;y you can become a pro! The more you play with the wiki, the more you will love it!!!

Because you will not be able to use this wiki after the class, you do want to set up your own account and create your own wiki to play with.  Go here to get your education version of PBWorks: http://www.pbworks.com/education.html.  Be sure to sign up for the education version because you get all sorts of free things like student accounts, etc.  Once there, if  you don't mind, go ahead and set up a separate page for the 6340 course and copy this information over.  If you are not sure how to do that, send me an email and I will provide the steps you need to complete that.

I also added your name to the Diigo group - but you will need to go there to log in.

Welcome to class!
